Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was shot dead on Tuesday during a speaking event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.

The 31-year-old was delivering his signature “Prove Me Wrong” talk when a single gunshot rang out.

Witnesses said a figure dressed in dark clothing was spotted on a rooftop moments before the bullet struck Kirk in the neck.

Eyewitnesses described a fountain of blood spurting from his carotid artery as he raised an arm before collapsing.

His private security rushed him to a hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead.

Footage of the incident, circulating widely on social media, has been described as disturbing and has fuelled national shock.

Police confirmed that a person of interest was briefly detained but later released, with no immediate arrests announced.

Investigators have not disclosed a motive. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has joined state and local authorities in probing the attack.

News of Kirk’s killing spread quickly, drawing reactions from across the political spectrum. All living former American presidents issued a rare joint statement warning that political disagreements must never spill into violence.

Former President Joe Biden described the shooting as “an attack on democracy itself.”

President Donald Trump, one of Kirk’s closest allies, said in a statement: “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead.” In a televised address, Trump called the killing “a dark moment for America” and blamed what he described as “radical left rhetoric” for fuelling political violence. His confrontational “Prove Me Wrong” debates on college campuses attracted both enthusiastic supporters and fierce critics.

A vocal ally of Trump, Kirk defended his policies and questioned the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election results, a stance that cemented his popularity on the right but deepened his notoriety on the left.

His podcast, The Charlie Kirk Show, was among the most downloaded political shows in the country, while his social media accounts frequently amplified culture war flashpoints.

Gun rights were a defining part of Kirk’s identity. He repeatedly championed the Second Amendment, arguing that armed citizens were a safeguard against tyranny and that more guns, not fewer, were needed to protect Americans.

He dismissed most gun control proposals as left-wing attempts to erode freedom, often insisting that mental health and cultural breakdown were to blame for mass shootings, not firearms themselves.

Turning Point USA, under his leadership, regularly hosted pro-gun speakers and content.

Supporters hailed him as a fearless defender of constitutional rights, while critics said his rhetoric trivialised the dangers of America’s gun violence crisis.

The fact that Kirk himself was killed by a gunshot has added a haunting layer of irony to the tragedy.

Critics often accused him of spreading misinformation and promoting divisive rhetoric.

Turning Point USA itself has faced scrutiny over its campus tactics and for allowing extremist voices on its platforms.

Supporters, however, saw Kirk as a fearless defender of free speech and traditional American values.
