Makinde Attends Olubadan Coronation, Silent on Doctors’ October 2 Strike Threat

Last week, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State attended the coronation ceremony of the State’s former Governor, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, as the new monarch of Ibadanland.

Governor Makinde attended the ceremony to engage in the statutory rite of coronation, sacrificing his annual leave for the occasion.

Meanwhile, while the Governor was planning to attend the coronation ceremony, the State’s Doctors had issued a statement, warning to go on strike by October 2 over unmet demands.

The Doctors, under their aegis, Nigerian Medical Association, threaten this on behalf of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital (LAUTECH), with a warning that if the state government fails to address their demands for improved welfare of members in LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, the strike is inevitable.

Already, PIJAlance reported that In 2025 alone, LAUTECH medical personnel had embarked on four strikes with nurses, increasing the number barely two weeks ago.

Their demands have always been bordering poor remuneration, Unpaid arrears and other related matters.

The Chairman of the association, Dr Happy Adedapo, said five days ago in Ibadan that the strike is intended to draw attention to the pressing issues facing healthcare workers, including deteriorating welfare, inadequate infrastructure, and burnout, in a bid to prompt government action.

He said that the association had issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Oyo State government on September 18 to address their demands.

He stated that the association’s demands encompass a range of issues, including improved remuneration structures and timely payment of allowances.

Others are the recruitment of additional medical staff, infrastructure upgrades, and enhanced governance structures for LAUTECH teaching hospital.

“We have engaged the deputy governor, deputy speaker of the house of assembly, the commissioner of health and members of the Oyo state council of elders.

“We have written letters to the governor himself to find lasting solutions to these issues to no avail. We are not demanding too much as a labourer is worthy of his wage”.

“We are not going back on our decision except the government commences the process of improving the welfare of our members at LAUTECH,” he said.

Adedapo warned that failure of the government to act could lead to the total collapse of healthcare services across Oyo state.

He called on the Governor and other stakeholders to urgently intervene to prevent a looming crisis in the state healthcare system.

Notably, medical professionals’ neglecting of work through industrial strike often leads to tragedy.

Last week, reports noted that the ongoing strike of nurses and residents doctors left patients stranded and, in some cases, dead in the hospital.

The doctors’ major demands include the implementation of minimum wage for LAUTECH Teaching Hospital staff, which has not been enforced despite the implementation for other healthcare workers in the state.
