What are pointers?

“Pointers” are how Windows (and other operating systems) remember where files are located on a hard drive. Every file and folder on your hard drive has an address that indicates to Windows where the data in the file starts and finishes. Windows erases the file’s pointer and designates the sectors that hold its data as accessible when you delete a file. The sectors holding the file’s data are regarded as free space by the file system, even though the file is no longer physically located on your hard drive. Nevertheless, the file remains recoverable until Windows actually overwrites the sectors holding the contents of the file with new data. On a hard drive, these erased files can be found and restored by a file recovery programme.
