Where Do Deleted Files Go on Phone and PC?

Ever wonder where your deleted files disappear to? Or have you never thought to ask questions? Well, according to Microsoft manager Buckly K. M., deleted files remain even after being removed from the trash or recycle bin—beyond the familiar “Recycle Bin” on computers and “Trash” on smartphones.

Buckly says a file that you delete does not actually disappear; it just stays on your hard drive, even after you remove it from the Recycle Bin. This enables file recovery for both you and other users. If you are not careful, this can also enable others to retrieve your private files, even if you believe you have erased them. When you are getting rid of a computer or hard drive, this is an especially crucial consideration.

What are pointers?

“Pointers” are how Windows (and other operating systems) remember where files are located on a hard drive. Every file and folder on your hard drive has an address that indicates to Windows where the data in the file starts and finishes. Windows erases the file’s pointer and designates the sectors that hold its data as accessible when you delete a file. The sectors holding the file’s data are regarded as free space by the file system, even though the file is no longer physically located on your hard drive. Nevertheless, the file remains recoverable until Windows actually overwrites the sectors holding the contents of the file with new data. On a hard drive, these erased files can be found and restored by a file recovery programme. A file recovery tool such as Wise Data Recovery can only restore a portion of the data if the file has been partially overwritten. Keep in mind that solid-state drives (SSDs) are exempt from this; the reasons are explained below.

In case you are wondering why your computer does not simply remove files upon deletion, the answer is rather straightforward. It is incredibly quick to erase a file’s pointer and designate its space as available. On the other hand, it takes a lot longer to actually erase a file by overwriting its contents. For instance, it would take almost instantaneous to remove a 10 GB file. It might take several minutes to completely remove the contents of the file—that is the same amount of time it would take to write ten gigabytes of data to your hard drive. Operating systems such as Windows do not remove a file’s contents upon deletion in order to speed up operations and save time. A “file-shredding” tool can be used to remove a file’s contents when it is deleted; for further details, refer to the previous section.

Solid-State Drives Work Differently

Solid state drives are exempt from all of this (SSDs). Deleted files are erased instantly and irreversibly when using an SSD that has TRIM enabled (all contemporary SSDs support TRIM). In essence, information cannot be overwritten onto flash cells; instead, new information must be written after the contents of the flash memory are removed. If your operating system had not erased the file data right away, future writes to the flash memory would have required first wiping the memory. This is how your operating system speeds up write performance. Write speed to an SSD would gradually decrease as a result.

Usually, deleted files are simply marked as deleted. The specific procedure varies based on the file system being utilised. In Microsoft Operating Systems, a file is designated as deleted by appending the HEX E5 character to the first character of the file name, followed by setting the file’s FAT chain to 0.

The FAT chain functions similarly to a disk’s file address. Therefore, when it is set to 0, the disc space where the deleted file was located effectively becomes unallocated disc space, making it ready to accept new data from files that have just been created or anything else that requires disc space.

Subsequent research indicates that a file that you remove from your computer does not truly vanish. Rather, the file system indicates that the space the file took up is free for future use. The deleted file is still there on the storage medium until that space is filled with new information.

Simply put, a file is usually moved to the Trash on Mac or the Recycle Bin on Windows when it is deleted from your computer. Until you empty the Trash or Recycle Bin, the file is still present for simple restoration; after that, it is regarded as permanently erased.

Put another way, until new data is written to the same disc location, a deleted file remains on the storage medium. If you use specialised data recovery services or software, you might be able to recover the deleted file until that point.

After being reset to writable, the media section is no longer displayed by the operating system. Except in cases where it is overwritten, the data remains intact until the operating system requires that space, or until you manually overwrite that section with zeros using a command or another method. After you use the DEL or RM commands, clear out your trash, and then this is finished. Simply right-click and select “Trash” to place it in your trash.

A file that you remove from your computer or other storage device—like a USB flash drive or hard drive—does not vanish instantly and irrevocably. According to your operating system, the file is usually transferred to the “Trash” or “Recycle Bin” folder instead. This makes it simple for you to get the file back if you decide to change your mind.

The file remains even after you delete it from the Trash or Recycle Bin. The operating system designates the file’s space as being reusable. It is possible to use specialise to recover the deleted file until fresh data is written over that area.

A file that you remove from your computer or storage device does not instantly disappear or become unreadable, according to Techie Nimmi, who put it differently. Instead, the file system marks the space occupied by the deleted file as available for future use. This suggests that while the deleted file is removed from the file system, the data remains unaltered until it is replaced with new data.

Put another way, until new data is written to the same disc location, a deleted file remains on the storage medium. If you use specialised data recovery services or software, you might be able to recover the deleted file until that point.

Always keep in mind that there are several factors that can affect the chances of a successful file recovery, including the file system, the duration since the deletion, and the storage device’s activity level. The more often a device is used after a file is deleted, the greater the chance of overwriting deleted data.

To improve the chances of recovering erased contents, you should stop using the storage device as soon as you realise there has been data loss and use BLR Tools data recovery software or services.
