The Labour Party (LP) candidate in the 2023 Lagos governorship election, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has weighed in on speculations about former President Goodluck Jonathan returning to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Reports suggest that some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are pushing Jonathan to run on its platform.

According to Rhodes-Vivour, Jonathan’s perceived strength lies in the comfort northerners have with him, particularly because he can only serve one term.

In an interview with Punch, he noted that while this makes Jonathan a formidable force, his return to Aso Rock remains uncertain and fraught with risks.

He said many Nigerians believe it is still the South’s turn to rule, especially after eight years of a northern president who left the country more divided.

Rhodes-Vivour added that President Bola Tinubu’s government has deepened those divisions and failed to reflect the nation’s diversity.

“But Jonathan has a lot to lose if he does not win the presidency,” he warned.

“He has already served six and a half years, close to eight, and there is the question of swearing the oath of office twice. With the current setup of our judiciary, I am not sure if he would even get through.”
