A yet-to-be-identified alleged member of a cult group was brutally gang-injured by a rival cult group at Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.

The incident, which occurred within the OSPOLY campus in broad daylight on Tuesday, left two people seriously injured, with one feared dead.

PIJAlance gathered that some students of the institution, suspected to be members of cult groups, converged to perpetrate the assault.

A video circulating on social media, recorded by individuals in a car, shows how the gang, numbering five, surrounded the victim and brutalised him.

Subsequently, another video obtained by PIJAlance shows the victim lying lifeless on a road leading to the institution’s ICT Centre, Stadium, and Senate Building—where several management members have their offices.

No one has been able to ascertain the major cause of the incident or determine whether the victim survived the attack.

The institution’s Director of Media, Mr. Bayo Fadeji, said the victim’s condition was so critical that a private hospital he was taken to rejected him.

Fadeji added that some individuals took the injured victim away, and he does not know his current whereabouts.

What Happened?

Multiple eyewitnesses told PIJAlance that a gunshot was first heard “before it was later discovered that someone was being brutalised,” a source, Abu (not the real name), said.

Upon the sound of the gunshot, PIJAlance confirmed that students around the scene, while fleeing for safety, sustained injuries—one collapsed immediately, while another fell and got wounded.

“At the sound of the gunshot,” Janet (not the real name) told PIJAlance, “everyone started running for safety. That was how the two other students got injured. One was running and got wounded. The other collapsed after hearing the gunshot.”

Janet stated that as of the time of filing this report, “one of the injured persons has been discharged from the school medical centre. The second one is currently at a teaching hospital in Osogbo. I was told she’s doing fine, but they’re about to run some tests on her.”

Fadeji also noted that the institution has not been able to confirm whether the individuals involved are students of OSPOLY.

Speaking with PIJAlance, he said, “I have heard many things. Some people said three people were killed, others said four, but as far as I am concerned, nobody died.

“The issue is just a clash between two rival cult groups (Ẹiyẹ and Alora). We quickly rose to the occasion and invited the anti-cultism police unit, and they have been on the ground to quell any form of retaliation.

“But there is one guy who was seriously injured. We have not been able to confirm his studentship. If we can, we will take appropriate disciplinary action through the student disciplinary committee.”

The incident underscores the long-standing menace of cultism in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
