President Bola Tinubu has made an impassioned appeal to Nigerian graduates to remain in the country and utilize their skills to drive national development, rather than seeking “greener pastures” abroad.
Speaking at the 29th and 30th combined convocation ceremony of the University of Uyo, Tinubu emphasized the importance of patriotism and contributing to the betterment of Nigeria and the world.
Tinubu, represented by Professor Owunari Georgewill, Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, encouraged the graduands to become agents of change by leveraging their knowledge and tools to address societal issues.
He acknowledged the current challenges facing the country but assured that his administration is implementing measures to mitigate their impact, particularly on vulnerable citizens.
The President also stressed the need for universities to champion demand-driven research that enhances human lives. He lamented that research efforts often end up on shelves, rather than being utilized for practical benefits.
“As you go into the world, I urge you to be agents of change, using your knowledge and tools in uplifting our society and contributing to the growth and development of Nigeria and the world at large.
“I appeal to your sense of patriotism, imploring you to avoid the temptation of hurrying to look for greener pastures outside. We can make our pastures equally as green or even greener than those of other climes”.
Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, who received a doctorate degree in political science from the University, expressed gratitude and noted that the conferment motivates him to do more for the state.
Tinubu’s appeal comes amid concerns about brain drain and the emigration of skilled Nigerians seeking better opportunities abroad popularly known as ‘JAPA.
Recently, Nigerian nurses in the UK and US faced difficulties due to certificate verification issues, highlighting the challenges faced by Nigerians seeking to work abroad.
