The Emefeelost Syndrome
The eras of Mandela in South Africa and that of one Murtala Muhammed, Obafemi Awolowo, and Shehu Musa Yar’dua in the western part of Africa called Nigeria, have gone; here in Niger Area, the era of tyranny has come to stay, wearing the garb of democracy. Our democracy is a teethed dog drawn on paper. It can never bark.
We’re a group of freedom fighters with one consensual suit. We’ve come with one voice to sue the Buffalo, Emefeelost and the little selected pig made to lord over our funds. They have kicked over the traces, leaving the rest of us in a painful travesty, for this reason, they must be dealt with, especially both Emefeelost and Buffalo.
Our people were promised democracy and yet with Emefeelost and Buffalo, impunity and illegality ride on our backs, slapping our cringing occiputs, without remorse. And now, they have thought they can claim the sky. It’s a free country.
Emefeelost decided 20 moons ago that alongside tax payments, we should also pay a herd of Jangali as a duty stamp. All business owners are duty-bound to pay the duty-stamp, hitherto. And this is outside the Value Added Tax, on all purchases, civil servants and schools. Emefeelost was actually carrying out the order of Buffalo and other ignoble cabals who want to make billions with the people’s hard-earned tusk. And they did make it yet…
…our roads, meandered while, our rural communities while away with water scarcity; waterborne diseases ravage some other residents like the plague.
But the bespectacled Emefeelost and hard-hearted Buffalo do not care, they only share those billions and tax us to pay more.
We must also not talk, or else, we will be shot dead. 10 of our comrades were gunned down eight moons ago for demanding drastic government intervention in education. Not to talk of a bunch of others, unknown, silently killed.
About the 77 youth protesting against bad governance and the brutality of the Department of Deaf Servants Service (DSS) against the innocent citizens in Lagoon State; unharmed, were gunned down with their bodies hidden, hitherto. Their crime was that they protested for a good Niger Area. My son, my nephew and my cousin were part of others jailed.
But after these, comes the Jangali duty-stamp with the governor of the Lagoon State, denying the killings, too. What height of treason! Inspite of this, He has been forced into the office again, alongside, the Eleyi of Ogbun State, among others.
We were shocked but five out of us, who demand for why, were sold out to slavery of DSS jail, living our businesses crumbled to ashes, through tear and gear, we pay.

However, three moons ago, Emefeelost who happens to be our Hakimi, while General Were Buffalo, the Commander-in-Chief of the greatest manor in our dispersed Niger Area, decided to change our currency. They said there is a new one from Arab and that we’ll be using it, now.
We formerly transacted with an elephant tusk and with it, there is no other in the whole Swahili-speaking-centralised manor of ours. But our leaders have decided to change the currency. So, they asked us to submit all we have to have the new currency.
We did.
Suddenly, Emefeelost, one, that is already Lost in the maddening pool of deeds ,who also doubled as our treasury head, said our currency needs proper regulation and so, we cannot have access to the whole thing we deposited. Quite bizarre, isn’t it? Our money. From there, the heavens were closed and hell let loose.
We queued up, and protested; some of us passed out, the sick afterwards, died—all were at the want of our favourite tusk. But our government was unruffled. We need our tusks. We cannot continue, like this, we insisted. I, among, many other traders, took to my feet and went to Zuma Rock. That’s the Buffalo’s House and the Government House. We protested but unknown to us, Dogari’s fully armed officers have been ordered to dismiss us with his blood-curdling ammunition. In the end, like a blitzkrieg, everything ended bloodied.
We were shot at. Five of us were again gunned down. I was also injured, so we leapt for our Dear Lives.
Meanwhile; the new currency was as the previous tusk. The only difference comes with saturation, living it to bring out a shade of different colours.
Ah! This is what?
We felt the worst, but the worst was yet to come. The toothless Alkalis ruled, Emefeelost and Buffalo identified with the deaf. Three moons after, Emefeelost decided to hear them out. So our old currency was made legal tender again moreover, the die is cast.
However, if our government could say our old and new tusks should coexist, why was the redesigned currency in the first place? Was the death of our people in vain? And if yes, could humans rights be meaningless? Both Emefeelost and Buffalo are criminals in the government, they need to answer these questions…in fact, they need to stand the trials.
We cannot continue in lawlessness and say democracy should be in abundance.
Both old and new tusk tussles have earmarked a type of social syndrome in our people. Emefeelost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!……..Is the new name ringing tones of familiarity to our ears? Especially, when our tusk is being shipped in through the sapping camels’ back, in the company of the daredevil Deaf State Security service (DSS) while we’re in queues and bathing in each other’s sweat, just for the tusk, our tusk that we deposited in the purse of the government, hoping to have the new ones. This is the new syndrome, the Eme and feelost syndrome, ravaging like the pandemic.
