STEM-Focused Organisation Can Get Up to $75,000 for AAUW Community Action Grant (Apply)

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) has opened its 2026/27 Community Action Grant, inviting proposals from U.S.-based organisations committed to dismantling barriers to girls’ participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The award, valued at up to $75,000, seeks to support projects designed for girls in kindergarten through 12th grade that foster confidence, learning, and engagement in STEM fields. Smaller awards may also be granted depending on the scope and capacity of each proposal.

AAUW said the initiative is designed to empower communities by supporting programmes that equip girls with the skills, mentorship and encouragement needed to thrive in traditionally male-dominated fields. Hands-on activities, mentoring by women professionals, family involvement and confidence-building elements are highlighted as priorities for selection.

Projects must not only address skills but also demonstrate how community input, especially from the girls themselves and their families, has shaped the programme’s design.

Eligible applicants are non-profit organisations with 501(c)(3) status or educational institutions located in the United States. Organisations must either have a proven track record in running programmes for girls in STEM or present strong evidence of capacity and commitment to deliver meaningful results. In addition, applicants are expected to maintain clear financial accountability, track expenses accurately and provide transparent reports.

AAUW excludes individuals from applying, as well as projects that aim to fund scholarships for higher education, settle debts, carry out political or lobbying activities, or undertake fundraising efforts. Infrastructure costs, such as building or renovation, will also not be supported.

The grant’s timeline begins with a Letter of Interest, which must be submitted by October 31, 2025. Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis through November. Selected applicants will then be invited to submit full proposals between November 2025 and January 2026. Successful projects will be announced on April 15, 2026, with funds released in July.

AAUW’s programme places strong emphasis on equity and community engagement, requiring applicants to show evidence of listening to community voices and incorporating feedback mechanisms. Programmes that serve historically underrepresented communities in STEM are given particular consideration. Applicants are advised to propose projects with a realistic scope that aligns with the available funding, as awards may vary in size.

The Community Action Grant remains a flagship of AAUW’s mission to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research. Interested organisations are encouraged to prepare early, ensure compliance with eligibility requirements and highlight clear outcomes that demonstrate impact in advancing STEM participation for young girls.
