The Rivers State Government has vowed to seal off all poorly constructed buildings without legal approvals across the state, following two recent building collapses in Port Harcourt.
This is coming after a three-storey building under construction collapsed in the Abacha Road area of the new Government Reservation Area, just five days after another similar incident in Ogbogoro Community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, which resulted in one fatality and two injuries.
To tackle the growing concern of building collapses, the government has established a task force to monitor construction sites and ensure developers comply with state building laws and regulations.
State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Evans Bipi, disclosed that a task force has been established to monitor construction sites and ensure compliance with state building laws and regulations.
Bipi attributed the collapses to gross violations of government-approved building plans, including the use of substandard materials in waterlogged areas.
“I would advise all Rivers State residents who intend to build to visit the State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development to process their building plans and obtain the necessary approvals.
“The ministry will, of course, guide you on whether a three-storey or two-storey building is feasible. We have decided to establish a task force to ensure compliance with government laws and regulations concerning buildings.”
