The Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers House of Assembly has resolved to mark October 29 as a Commemoration Day to remember the “unprovoked attacks” on the legislature.
This decision was reached during a plenary session at the Assembly Quarters on Aba Road.
The lawmakers aim to honor the memory of the mindless burning of the Assembly Chamber on October 29, 2023, the attack on the Speaker’s residence, and the demolition of the Assembly Complex.
They accuse Governor Siminalayi Fubara of orchestrating these attacks to eliminate his perceived political enemies.
Speaker Amaewhule expressed frustration that, after 386 days, no convictions have been made regarding the arson attack.
Additionally, he criticized Governor Fubara for supervising the demolition of the Assembly Complex without the House’s knowledge or approval.
“It has been 386 days since the heartless burning down of the hallowed Chamber of the House, yet no conviction has been made, he said.
Through a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Martins Wachukwu, the Speaker also said it had been 341 days since the state Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, supervised the demolition of the Assembly Complex on the December 13, 2023 without the knowledge and approval of the House, describes it as a sad reminder of the brutal attacks on the legislature, which he described as the bastion of democracy.
“The House resolved to set aside every 29th of October as a solemn day to commemorate all the iniquitous, scandalous and malicious attacks on the Rivers State House of Assembly by Governor Fubara”, the statement said.
In other business, the House directed Julius Berger Plc to repair collapsed sections of alternative routes to the Port Harcourt Ring Road.
Lawmakers commended the House Committee on Works for their detailed report and urged continued synergy with the contracting firm to ensure the project’s success.
This development comes amidst ongoing tensions between the Rivers State government and the Assembly. Recently, Governor Fubara announced plans to present the 2025 state budget to the Victor Oko-Jumbo-led Assembly.
