The Nigerian Police Force said it has arrested an officer involved in a viral video featuring the sons of Lagos billionaire industrialist, Chief Rasaq Okoya, abusing the naira.
In a statement jointly released by the Force and its Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Friday via their verified X handles, the police officer involved in the video was arrested and detained.
The statement stated that the officer has been identified and is facing disciplinary action.
Adejobi in the statement also condemned the officer’s involvement in the incident, describing it as unethical and unprofessional.
However, no mention was made of any action against Okoya’s sons, who appeared to be the main perpetrators of the naira abuse in the viral footage.
The abuse of the naira remains a violation of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) regulations, which prohibit the mishandling or spraying of currency during public events.
The statement read, “The policeman captured in the recent viral video shared by the sons of the Lagos businessman, Chief Okoya, where they were abusing the naira, has been identified and detained for disciplinary action.”
Meanwhile, netizens have criticised the action of the Force. Daniel Regha, a socal media commentator called out the police, questioning why Okoya’s sons were not also arrested.
Regha on X posted that “The police officer “in a viral video of Wahab and Raheem Okoya” has been arrested, but what about Chief Okoya’s sons? Or they’re above the law @PoliceNG? Or need I remind u of the Section 21 of the CBN Act (2007) which condemns the spraying of Naira notes which was clearly done in the same video. Let’s not also forget that the officer was holding the naira notes for the Okoya’s. No-one should be above the law. @officialEFCC.”
