The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has launched a series of raids against illegal street traders in Ibadan, the state capital.
The operation, led by OYRTMA Chairman Adekoya Adesagba, targeted areas such as Oritamerin, Gege, Agbeni, and Ogunpa, where makeshift markets and severe traffic congestion have become a menace.
According to Adesagba, the raids aim to tackle the challenges of blocked roads and slow traffic in these areas. The OYRTMA has adopted measures to include the closure of market stalls and imposition of fines on those caught. Recently, 12 individuals operating an illegal motor park in one of the markets were apprehended and fined.
Adesagba emphasized that the government’s efforts are geared towards ensuring the safety and protecting the property of traders. He urged traders to desist from selling on the roads, noting that the OYRTMA’s enforcement operation is part of the state government’s broader efforts to reduce accidents and improve road safety.

The OYRTMA’s actions are part of a larger initiative to address the challenges of traffic congestion and environmental pollution in Ibadan.
The agency has been working to ensure that traders operate within designated markets, rather than on the streets, in order to reduce accidents and improve road safety.
In related news, the OYRTMA has also warned against manual collection of fines from traffic offenders, instead directing offenders to pay fines directly into the government’s account.
Additionally, the agency has commenced sitting of the Oyo State Traffic Violation Tribunal, which has treated 27 cases so far.
