The Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), Hashim Abioye, has alleged that officers of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested commission staff on election duty across the state.
Abioye made the claim in a statement released via OSSIEC’s official X (formerly Twitter) page on Saturday.
While commending voters for turning out to exercise their rights, he apologised to the media for the commission’s inability to provide accreditation materials. He attributed this to the Police sealing off OSSIEC’s headquarters, where the materials were stored.
He further stated that delays in the delivery of materials to some polling units were a direct result of the arrests of officials responsible for their transportation. However, he assured that new materials had since been dispatched and that voting was now underway.
“Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested staff of the commission who are on election duty across the state.
“For the units where materials did not arrive on time, it was due to the Police arresting the officials conveying them. However, new materials have been deployed, and voting is now ongoing,” he stated.
Meanwhile, a video spotted by the PIJAlance has established a distressing narrative that may combat with the fairness of the election.
According to the video, voters were given pre-thumbprinted ballot papers just to only drop in ballot boxes.
