Massacre in Ebonyi: Amegu Nkalaha Community Devastated in Suspected Herdsmen Attack

A wave of terror swept through the Amegu Nkalaha Community in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State as suspected herdsmen launched a deadly assault, leaving scores dead and homes reduced to ashes.

Survivors describe the attack as one of the most brutal in recent history, recounting how gunmen stormed their village in the dead of night, opening fire indiscriminately and setting homes ablaze.

Ebonyi State Police Command spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the attack to Channels Television, stating that security operatives had been deployed to the area but that the full death toll remains unknown as investigations continue. Yes, an attack occurred, and police are responding. We are still working to determine the precise number of casualties,” Ukandu said.

Local authorities, including Ishielu LGA Chairperson Ifeoma Agwu, have begun the grim task of recovering bodies. We are moving the victims’ bodies to the mortuary as we speak. It’s difficult to determine the exact number of fatalities at this moment,” she stated.

While the motive behind the attack remains under investigation, sources within the community suggest it may be linked to the recent killing of cattle allegedly owned by herdsmen.

A resident, speaking anonymously, claimed that the cattle were killed by suspected Eastern Security Network (ESN) operatives, triggering fears of retaliation. We have been living in fear since the incident with the cows. Community leaders have tried to calm tensions, but this attack has now left us devastated,” the source said.

Heartbroken residents are now calling on the Ebonyi State Government and security agencies to take immediate action and prevent further bloodshed. Many say they no longer feel safe in their own homes. As the investigation unfolds, the tragedy at Amegu Nkalaha raises urgent questions about security, conflict resolution, and the escalating violence between local communities and herdsmen in Nigeria.
