The incident, which occurred during a banned signing-out ceremony, took place at Skyline Arena, a paintball centre located within the market, approximately 0.33 km away from a police monitoring unit.
A Facebook report says over 10 shots were fired, but the police team attached to the unit could not arrest the perpetrators, despite it happening around a place that could be described as highly secured due to the presence of a police monitoring unit.
The institution’s management has also confirmed the incident, describing it as “saddened”.

The Registrar of the institution, Olayinka Balogun, in a statement in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, said the death is deeply saddening due to the tragic incident that occurred last Wednesday at the Ultramodern Wazo market in Ogbomoso, resulting in the unfortunate death of one of the students during a sign-out ceremony.
Balogun explained that the institution had earlier issued a ban on sign-out activities and consequently prohibited such within the precincts of its campus since 2023 and also informed hotels around the ancient city.
The statement reads in part, āIt is worthy of note that the university had issued a ban on sign-out activities and consequently prohibited such within the precincts of its campus since 2023.
āHotels in and around Ogbomoso were also informed and written not to avail LAUTECH students the use of their facilities for ceremonies of that nature.
āDespite the ban, however, preliminary investigations after the occurrence revealed that a group of students who engaged in rule-bending behaviour chose to hold a sign-out ceremony on the football pitch within the Wazo Ultramodern market.”
Eyewitnesses who saw Olanrewaju said he reportedly left the venue on his motorbike after he was shot. “He struggled to move it till he fell off, where he was later found unresponsive,” Balogun’s statement added.
PIJAlance had earlier reported a similar case in March, where suspected cultists invaded LAUTECH and disrupted the examination process.
Also, at a point in 2021, LAUTECH had banned the signing-out ceremony, citing that it promoted immoralities and indiscipline.
