The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI, has successfully evicted occupants of 84 illegal rooms built under Eko Bridge at Elegbata, Lagos Island
This operation was spearheaded by Corps Marshal, retired Maj. Olanini Cole, after a public attack prompted a petition to the state Commissioner for Environment, leading to an order for demolition.
“It is interesting that eight toilet pipes were link to the Lagoon, closed to where fishermen were fishing. Some of the occupants were cooking for the public in that place.
“The water they are using to cook can cause public health hazard. One person operating the toilet was detained,” corps marshal said.
According to him, the evictees claimed that they decided to live there because they have no money to rent decent apartments.
He also said that the operation would continue in all parts of the state to dislodge illegal occupants of black spots.
It’s shocking to note that some individuals had been living in these illegal structures for 30 years, citing inability to afford decent apartments. However, the risks associated with these structures are alarming. For instance, an eight-room toilet was discovered with pipes linked directly to the Lagoon, posing a significant public health hazard.
The Eko Bridge area has been a focus point for authorities recently. After a 15-month closure due to rehabilitation work, the bridge reopened to relieve commuters.
However, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu warned that continuous trading activities under the bridge would no longer be permitted to prevent further damage.
LAGESC’s operation highlights the need for sustained efforts to maintain environmental sanitation and public safety in Lagos. The agency’s commitment to dislodging illegal occupants of black spots across the state is crucial in addressing these concerns.
