Key Witness Against Smuggling Gunned Down in Ogun

One of the witnesses listed by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) in the organisation’s defence of the libel lawsuit filed by IBD Dende in response to FIJ’s undercover investigation and subsequent documentary on smuggling, Yomi Adetula, has been gunned down by unknown gunmen in Idi-Iroko, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The incident which occurred minutes after 10am on Sunday threw the residents of the premises in panic.

FIJ reports that Adetula is prior to his assassination, the Director, Anti-Arms Smuggling of the Social Orientation and Safety (So-Safe) Corps in Ogun State.

Multiple sources say Adetula was in his church, Celestial Church of Christ’s Eagle Parish, located off Old Baggage Road, Idi-Iroko, when gunmen invaded his and murdered him.

“They first shot him but the bullets did not penetrate him,” one resident told FIJ. “They then proceeded to inflict fatal wounds on him with their other weapons, which include hammer and machete. From the way they operated, it’s clear they were hired assassins.”

It was reported that Adetula, 54, is a prophet of the church.

The police spokesperson in the state Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Abeokuta the state capital on Sunday.

“On January 19, 2025, around 10:30 AM, the divisional police officer of Idiroko received a report that someone had been killed at a Celestial Church located along Old Baggage Road, Odo Eran, Idiroko,” she said.

She said that police officers got to the scene and discovered one Yomi Adetula, an 54-year-old man, lying face up in a pool of blood that stained his white celestial garment.

She also confirmed that upon closer inspection, his body was found to be riddled with bullets, and his head was severely damaged with an axe to verify that he was indeed dead.

“During the police investigation, it was revealed that three men entered the church, brandished a long double-barreled gun, aimed at their target, and fired a shot that caused chaos, and the assailant escaped.”

According to her, no arrest has been made but she maintained that the police is actively working to apprehend the fleeing suspects who escaped from the church toward the border area.

The body of the dead prophet has been deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Ilaro.
