Kaduna is currently in darkness as electricity workers under the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Kaduna State Council, commenced an indefinite strike over unpaid entitlements and poor working conditions.
The industrial action, which began on Monday, February 3, 2025, has left homes, businesses, and essential services in a complete blackout, worsening the economic struggles of residents.
The strike follows years of unresolved grievances, including five years of outstanding pension payments, non-payment of exit benefits for retirees, failure to implement the 2024 National Minimum Wage, and the alleged wrongful termination of workers. According to the letter circulating o social media, the union says management has ignored their demands despite repeated engagements, forcing them to take drastic action.
“The situation has become unbearable. Many of our members have retired without receiving their entitlements, and those still working are being denied their rights. Now, they have started sacking workers without due process. Enough is enough,” the letter stated.
Businesses across Kaduna have been thrown into disarray, with traders, manufacturers, and small business owners struggling to power their operations. Many residents, already battling economic hardships, have resorted to expensive alternative energy sources like generators and solar power.
According to a post on X by a user known as @ElderTunji: “National Union of Electricity Employees, Kaduna council, you really shouldn’t the dragging consumers into your industrial issues… There’s a National Industrial Court for a reason. If the services of your company were free it’s different, we freaking pay high tariffs now blud!”
The blackout has also hit hospitals and critical services, raising concerns about patient care and emergency responses.
Meanwhile, Kaduna Electric is yet to issue an official response to the strike, and there is no indication of a resolution in sight.
