Just In: Nigerians Welcome Violent Protest Over Naira Scarcity, Schools, Shops Closed Down

The wake of Wednesday in Nigeria meets with violent protests at some States in the country over Naira scarcity, illegal tendering of old Naira notes and Premium Motor Spirit also known as petrol scarcity. Based on this, schools and businesses in most of these States have been forced to close down. Tyres burning and vandalisation of some banks were inevitable, as underage pupils lead the protest.

 

In Oyo State, protest with a larger chunk of underage pupils, is currently engulfing its most parts with a persistent spreading of it like the plague every minute.

 

Ogbomoso is witnessing a stern protest majorly constituted with underage pupils over the persistent scarcity of naira, petrol in the country and the illegal tendering of old naira notes. Ibadan, the capital of the State has also been reported with the similar occurrence.

 

Meanwhile, this would be the second time protest will broke out in Ibadan over Naira and petrol scarcity with the last one costing the shooting of a life dead.

There were no vandalisation of properties except a car of Stanbic IBTC Bank staffer that was vandalised in Ogbomoso. This was done due to a tip that one of the protesters heard that they were being filmed.

 

However more banks were vandalised and set ablaze in Warri, Delta State.

 

Citizens have been having troubles accessing their money deposited in banks, there is neither new nor old naira notes while the Central Bank of Nigeria governor Godwin Emefiele has declared the old naira notes had ceased to be legal tender.

 

The frustration arising from this as hunger looms was the catalyst for the renewed protests. Some parts of Nigeria have gone up in flames this morning. Ogbomoso too is boiling now as protesters have blocked major highways and started burning disused tyres, thick smoke thus enveloping the Takie axis of the city where the protests began.

 

“How do they want us to survive, people have stopped collecting old naira notes because CBN insisted it had ceased to be legal tender and we can’t obtain new ones,” a distraught man who however refused to mention his name told ogbomosoinsightonline.com at Takie.

 

Continuing the man said, “I can’t give my children feeding allowance when they are going to school again, l can’t access my money in banks, and to feed at home is even difficult, l have money in bank l couldn’t retrieve it. To transport ourselves is difficult because commercial drivers and motorcyclists have stopped collecting old naira notes. For how long shall people continue to suffer over what is orchestrated by some unscrupulous leaders?”

 

Nigerians had hoped the Supreme Court would give a favourable ruling Wednesday on the case filed by three governors to set aside the order outlawing the old naira notes but the case was adjourned till February 22.

 

Presently, the protest is spreading.
