Jigawa Wants Farmers’ Association Chairman Arrested for Illegally Hiking Fee on Subsidized Produce
Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has directed the immediate arrest of Isyaku Katanga, Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Kiyawa Local Government Area.
The arrest order follows the illegal increase of farmers’ fees by N2,000 on subsidized farming inputs provided by the state government.
Governor Namadi, who issued the directive during an unscheduled inspection tour of the area, emphasized his commitment to protecting farmers’ interests.
He stressed that the state government will not tolerate any exploitation of farmers, who are the backbone of the economy. The governor also pledged to provide the full package of benefits to registered farmers, as mandated by the Federal Government.
“We will not tolerate any exploitation of our farmers. They are the backbone of our economy, and it’s our duty to ensure they’re treated fairly.”
“This move aims to support agricultural development and promote economic growth in the state. Failure to comply may result in further actions.”
According to sources, the illegal fee hike affected hundreds of farmers in the state, causing financial hardship and uncertainty about better gains from their farm harvests.
The governor has vowed to address the situation promptly and ensure that justice is served to those involved.
The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Muhammad Hamisu Gumel, noted that Governor Namadi’s experience in finance and economic planning has equipped him to tackle such issues effectively.
Gumel added that the governor’s administration has been focused on promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
“As a former commissioner of finance and economic planning, Governor Namadi understands the importance of prudent financial management. His experience in the private sector, particularly in auditing and finance, has equipped him to tackle such issues effectively.”

A prominent farmer in the area, Sagiru Madaki, welcomed the governor’s action, praising his prompt response to the situation.

The Namadi-led administration has initiated various programs to support farmers, including training initiatives, infrastructure development, and access to credit facilities. These efforts aim to enhance agricultural productivity and improve livelihoods.
