On Sunday evening, a group of armed robbers targeted the Ifite neighborhood in Awka, leading to the tragic death of a 200-level philosophy student from Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

Friends of the victim, Daniel, who had recently returned to school and had spent the evening watching a football match with them, could not have imagined that this would be his last night.

According to eyewitness accounts, Unizik student, Daniel willingly handed over his phone to the robbers but requested to keep his SIM card. One of the robbers, while attempting to remove the SIM card from the phone, accidentally pulled the trigger and shot Daniel in the stomach. He was immediately rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Recent History of Crime in Ifite

In recent years, Unizik has seen a rise in criminal activity, with students frequently falling victim to theft and exploitation.

However, the murder of Daniel marks the first time that a death has occurred during a robbery in the Ifite area.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, Ugonwa Chioma, a student at the university, described the situation as “hectic, tough, rough, and gory,” with constant reports of robberies and even deaths.

According to sources, on the night of the robbery, Daniel was in his hostel with a female friend, Idowu, when the armed robbers entered the premises.

Despite Daniel’s cooperation and politeness, the robbers shot him after he asked for his SIM card to be returned.

Violence Escalates in Unizik, Ifite Community

Multiple sources have reported that the robbery and murder of Daniel is not an isolated incident, but part of a larger pattern of violent crime in the Ifite area.

Several students have reported that over 13 people have been killed in the area in the past year alone, due to a combination of cult-related clashes, robberies, and unexplained gun violence.

As a result, many students have chosen to live off campus and even those with meetings on campus are hesitant to come to Ifite due to fears for their safety.

Despite efforts by the school authorities and the university union president to bring in security forces, the situation has continued to deteriorate.

According to Chioma, as of December 31st, 2022 there have been over 13 confirmed deaths in the area, with no sign of the violence abating.
