Ibadan-Based Advocate Launches Information Literacy Project, Trains 50 Journalists
Temiloluwa Oyeniyi, an Ibadan-based media advocate, organises a three-day boot camp training project for 50 journalists on Information Literacy in August.
The project, tagged “Media for Information Literacy (MIL),” receives support funds from the Nigerian Youth Futures Fund (NYFF) and Leap Africa to facilitate the training of the selected participants with the aims of promoting information literacy and the fact-check culture in Nigeria.
The project also gets the support of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), which endorses and launches its MIL not-for-profit Brochure themed “Code of Practice”, aiming to guide journalists towards the path of information literacy.
The 50 participants feature young and aspiring journalists who experienced facilitators from across news media in Nigeria, taught on the principles of journalism, dangers of fake news, fact-checking, research and investigative journalism.
Commenting on the necessity of the boot-camp training, Ms Oyeniyi, the project lead says “it is to foster responsible media, strengthen democratic values, as well as to improve the capacity of media organisations and media personnel, and influence existing media regulations in Ibadan, Oyo State.”
Veteran journalist and former ambassador to the Philippines, Yemi Farounbi, giving a keynote lecture at the opening of the boot camp, urges participants to equip themselves with the basic knowledge and skills to practice effective journalism, as well as to embrace credibility, value and integrity in their various activities to inform and educate the masses.
The NUJ Oyo State branch Vice Chairman, Mr Seye-Ojo, while addressing the participants, reiterates the commitment of the body to ensure the safety and well-being of journalists in the state, citing the regulations implemented by it to guide the conduct and behaviours of journalists.
Facilitators that graced the event, which was held at the NUJ Centre, Ibadan, were Afouda Samuel, Ighoruemuse Loveth (Big Love), and Adejumo Kabir, among others.
The participants also receive certificates for the training.
