In a solemn announcement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, confirmed the death of Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, at age 56.
Lt. General Lagbaja passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos after a prolonged illness, leaving a profound void in the nation’s military leadership, according to a statement from the Government House.
Born on February 28, 1968, and raised in the military discipline, Lt. General Lagbaja’s career spanned over three decades, filled with service and a commitment to Nigeria’s security.
His journey began in 1987 at the Nigerian Defence Academy, where he embraced the path of a soldier. Five years later, in 1992, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps, starting a distinguished career that saw him serve in some of the most challenging terrains across Nigeria.
Lt. General Lagbaja’s rise through the ranks was marked by courage and leadership in critical national security missions. His early assignments included serving as a platoon commander with the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion, roles that sharpened his tactical skills and underscored his commitment to Nigeria’s safety. His impact was felt across numerous operations, such as Operation ZAKI in Benue, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in the Southeast, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States. In each, he brought a combination of strategy and resilience, becoming a key figure in Nigeria’s internal security landscape.
Beyond Nigerian borders, Lagbaja’s thirst for knowledge led him to the United States Army War College, where he earned a Master’s in Strategic Studies, a testament to his dedication to modern military leadership and tactics. This international experience enriched his leadership philosophy, positioning him as a valuable asset in both local and global military spheres.
Appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu, Lt. General Lagbaja’s tenure, though brief, was impactful. His presence at the helm symbolized a new phase of strategic leadership, one grounded in experience and global insight. He was a man deeply committed to the welfare of his soldiers and the operational readiness of the Army.
Lt. General Lagbaja is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children, who now mourn the passing of a husband and father whose life was dedicated to duty, family, and country.
In his tribute, President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the Lagbaja family and the Nigerian Armed Forces, honoring the General’s significant contributions and unwavering service. “Nigeria has lost a true patriot,” the President said, “and his legacy will forever be remembered by the nation he served with courage.”
