A visually-impaired widow in Anambra State has been left devastated after a yet-to-be-identified woman allegedly stole her Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card and drained over N2 million from her account within minutes.

The tragic incident occurred over the weekend at an ATM point in Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area. It was uncovered on Tuesday when the widow approached her bank after receiving a series of suspicious debit alerts.

CCTV footage from the bank exposed the moment the suspect, dressed in a red top and black trousers, pretended to assist the elderly woman before cunningly swapping her ATM card with a fake one. The 42-second video, which has since gone viral, shows the suspect exploiting the widow’s vulnerability.

Sharing her harrowing experience, the widow, visibly shaken, recounted, “I went to the ATM to withdraw some cash, but I couldn’t operate the machine properly because of my condition. A lady nearby offered to help. She took my card, got my PIN, and swapped it with an expired one. I didn’t realize what had happened until I began receiving debit alerts. In a matter of minutes, she had emptied my account of over N2 million. This is devastating, especially when I urgently need funds for transactions.”

A bank official, speaking anonymously, emphasized the need for vigilance, especially for vulnerable individuals. “Never disclose your PIN to strangers, no matter how kind they appear. Seek assistance from authorized bank personnel. This act is heartless and wicked,” he said, urging the community to help identify the suspect.

The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation, with the Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, deploying all available intelligence tools to track down the perpetrator.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident and called on residents to provide information that could lead to the suspect’s arrest. “We are determined to bring the suspect to justice. This crime is not just a betrayal of trust but a threat to the safety of vulnerable individuals in our society,” Ikenga stated.

The incident has sparked outrage on social media, w condemning the suspect’s actions and calling for heightened security measures around ATM points.
