Gunmen Abduct Chevron Worker, Kill Driver in Akwa Ibom

A Chevron worker, Samuel Ekerenam, was abducted by gunmen on Saturday, November 23, in Eket, Akwa Ibom State.

The kidnappers, who arrived at the scene in a hail of bullets, killed Ekerenam’s driver and demoralized his police escort before whisking him away.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, the abduction occurred at around 5 pm within Ekerenam’s Hephzibah Shopping Mall in Eket.

 

“The Commissioner for Police, CP Joseph Eribo and his tactical commanders have visited the scene of the crime and efforts are on top gear to rescue the victim unhurt,” John said.

 

The police have confirmed that the victim’s driver was killed during the incident, and his police escort was demoralized.

However, as of the time of filing this report, the kidnappers had not made contact with the family, leaving them uncertain about the motive behind the abduction.

 

As gathered b a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that Ekerenam is not only a Chevron staff member but also a pastor. The source added that Ekerenam had returned from work on the same day he was abducted.

 

“We are yet to ascertain the motive of the kidnappers whether the man was seized for ransom or other motive because they are yet to contact the family.”

 

Meanwhile, this incident is not the first time the Ekerenam family has been targeted by kidnappers. In October 2019, Ekerenam’s wife, Mrs. Glory Ekerenam, was kidnapped in Eket and held captive in Ikot Ubo, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area of the state.
