Flooded Iwo LG Got ₦30.9m Ecology Funds Between January and May 2025, Yet Adeleke Dredged Only Once in 2024
Accounting documents from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) obtained by PIJAlance reveal that in June 2025, Osun State received ₦149,925,846.92 as its ecological fund share for May. Out of this, Iwo Local Government was allocated ₦5,913,314 to address its climate vulnerabilities.
Flooding has wreaked havoc in some communities in the Iwo Local Government Area (LGA) of Osun State. With Yafoye, Oke-Afo, and Agoro roads completely flooded last week, residents are pointing back to the overflowing of the Aiba River and other tributaries as the major cause of the unfortunate incident.
The State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has also expressed sympathy with residents of Iwo following the devastating flood after hours of heavy downpour.
Adeleke lamented the huge personal losses suffered by residents and pledged that his administration would intensify measures to safeguard lives and property from similar incidents in future.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Monday in Osogbo, the governor assured that resources had already been deployed to expand waterways in Iwo and neighbouring areas, in addition to earlier interventions.
The governor added that his administration would take stock of the damages and provide appropriate support to those affected.
He explained that before the latest incident, his administration had initiated flood prevention measures, including dredging the Aiba waterways to enhance water flow and prevent flooding.
“Following the incident, the government has mobilised resources for the channelisation of more waterways to ensure that this awful incident does not happen again,” he noted.
What is missing?
Every month, the Nigerian Federal Government disburses funds to states through a statutory provision known as the Federal Allocation. These allocations, derived from tax revenues and other sources, include a percentage (2/3%) specifically set aside to address ecological challenges across the country.
Through the Ecological Fund, millions of naira have been channelled to states to mitigate climate-related issues such as flooding. What is less known is that these funds are not only shared with the states but are further distributed to local governments within each state.

This pattern has continued in previous months, with substantial sums earmarked for the state and its local governments to confront recurring ecological and climate-related challenges.
For example, ₦6,072,732 was allocated to the LG in January as the Ecology fund. Also in February, ₦6,502,723. In March, ₦5,992,927 and April, ₦6,458,735, totalling ₦30,940,431, the LG received alone to tackle ecological disasters in 2025.
However, Governor Adeleke is only dredging waterways in Iwo, and even at that, the last dredging was done in June 2024 when Yemoja Pokuku, Kuti Aiba area, Mogaji area, Iwo Grammar School, latiko and Odo ori in Iwo were dredged according to this report.
