In response to a prevailing students protest following a significant increase in tuition fees, management of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), has announced the suspension of all physical academic activities on campus, transitioning to online learning indefinitely, to nip the whole situation in the bud.
The decision, communicated via a circular on October 13, comes just a day after the controversial fee hike was unveiled, which has left many students grappling with uncertainty about their financial obligations and academic futures.
The tuition increase, revealed on October 12, has faced vehement opposition from the Student Union body, with many expressing confusion over their ability to afford the new rates.
This upheaval has prompted some students to consider dropping out or forfeiting their academic admissions altogether, as gathered by our campus correspondent.
In the wake of the anxiety, reports surfaced regarding the suspension of certain Student Union Government (SUG) executive members over an undisclosed matter, coinciding with the tuition announcement.
This move was swiftly denied by the SUG, which has actively engaged with students through its Instagram platform, expressing their concerns. In a statement from SUG President Comrade Moyakinyo Olaolu, the union reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for students’ rights and resolving the ongoing issues.
The situation has prompted numerous students to voice their frustrations on various social media channels, seeking support from activist figures like VeryDarkMan to amplify their plight and push for a reconsideration of the tuition fee hike.
