Death Toll Clicks 7,000 in Syria, Turkey Earthquake

The recent earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria has resulted in a catastrophic disaster, with the death toll surpassing 7,000 people. The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has declared a state of emergency in ten provinces for the next three months to aid in the recovery efforts.

The harsh weather conditions, including cold and snow, have made search and rescue operations more difficult. Despite these challenges, many countries have offered their assistance and aid to help with the disaster.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has reported that the Bab al-Hawa crossing, the only entry point for life-saving aid from Turkey into Syria, has been temporarily disrupted due to road damage from the earthquake. However, the crossing itself remains intact.

The miraculous rescue of a Syrian family from the rubble after 40 hours has been reported, and Saudi Arabia has pledged to provide aid and relief to both Turkey and Syria through its King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has also spoken with President Erdogan and promised further comprehensive support in dealing with the aftermath of the disaster.

Meanwhile, operations at Iskenderun Port in the Turkish province of Hatay have been temporarily stopped after a fire broke out, causing significant damage following the earthquakes. The  fire has since been extinguished.
