Agbo Chinwe Spearheads Initiative to Empower Girls on International Day of the Girl Child
Agbo Chinwe, convener of Girls Awake, spearheaded an inspiring initiative on 11 October 2024, celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child by empowering over 700 girls across Lagos State.
The event, themed “Her Safety, Our Priority: Securing a Future for Every Girl,” focused on vital topics such as mental health, self-awareness, and self-love. Through interactive workshops and engaging discussions, the initiative aimed to equip participants with the necessary tools to navigate the challenges they face in today’s society.
Chinwe expressed her commitment to fostering a supportive environment for young girls, emphasising the importance of mental well-being and self-confidence. “It is crucial for girls to understand their worth and have the courage to speak up,” she stated.
The event featured a session conducted by the Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI), a leading mental health advocacy group. The session addressed common mental health challenges faced by young girls, providing them with essential strategies for managing their emotional health.
Participants shared their experiences, with one girl noting, “I learnt how important it is to take care of my mental health and not be afraid to speak up.” The positive feedback highlighted the significant impact of the initiative.
In her closing remarks, Chinwe encouraged the girls to uphold values that promote personal growth and societal change. She distributed copies of her book, “Becoming You: The Puberty Guide for Girls,” which offers practical advice on body image and self-care.
Teachers accompanying the students praised the event, with one remarking, “This programme is exactly what the girl child needs right now. It has empowered our students in ways that will positively impact their personal and academic lives.”
Chinwe’s initiative reflects a broader commitment to empowering girls and fostering a supportive community, ensuring that young women have the resources and confidence to realise their potential.
