The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in Nigeria is currently going through its historic security breach. According to a short piece posted on its verified social media platforms last year December, the Bureau’s website has been hacked.
Checks as of January, 2025 have found that the NBS website has yet to be revived from what it could be purportedly attributed to the said cyber attack. This is roughly 16 days since the hack was announced on December 18, 2024.
There has been no communication from the Bureau on the website, leaving the status of the hack remains unknown. The Bureau has also maintained a perpetual silence since its last post in December, 2024, stating its website has been hacked. The post had read: “This is to inform the public that the NBS Website has been hacked and we are working to recover it. Please disregard any message or report posted until the website is fully restored.
Thank you.”
NBS is the Nigeria’s foremost statistics office that gives regular updates on data-related reports pertaining to the country.
Concerns have emerged from Nigerians on the possible alterations in the NBS data based on the reported hack on its website. But there has been no further official statement to prove otherwise. Hitherto, NBS website has been inaccessible, making it first of its kind since 2008.
Worthy of note, statistics office in Nigeria was established in 1947. Notably, the statistics office then was just a department under Federal Office of Statistics (FOS). The name, NBS, started gaining ground in around 2003 after the Federal order for Federal Office of Statistics (FOS) and the National Data Bank (NDB) to merge and create what is called today NBS.
Barely over a decade after, the NBS now hacked website was registered on December 25, 2008. Since then, PIJAlance tracked the website’s activities, including the Bureau’s social media platforms and found that they have never been hacked.
The sudden security breach however, underscores the dire needs in Nigeria’s security infrastructure to especially, safeguarding Nigeria’s state and Nigerians.
